St. Gerard Jubilee Year

April 26, 2025, marked the beginning of the Jubilee Year of the Tercentenary of the birth of St. Gerard. St Gerard’s determination to achieve sainthood led him to run away from home in search of his vocation. Despite initial rejections, he found a welcome among the Redemptorist missionaries, where he was professed as a brother and devoted his life to manual labor in the community. Throughout his life, he endured calumnies with gentleness and patience. In the Sele valley, he carried out an intense apostolic work in isolated villages, distinguishing himself by his charity and dedication. He had a special gift for spiritual accompaniment, especially with the nuns who came to him for advice. His life was distinguished by simplicity, deep prayer and charity.

Throughout his life, he was renowned for performing numerous miracles that demonstrated his compassion and connection to God. One memorable miracle involved him multiplying bread to feed those who were struggling financially, a testament to his heart for people experiencing poverty. His ability to drive away mice from a farmer’s field further demonstrated his gentle spirit and care for the community. However, one of the most extraordinary miracles attributed to him involved a pregnant woman who was in the throes of a difficult labor. With much desperation, she placed a handkerchief that St. Gerard had blessed upon her belly, and to her amazement, she soon experienced a smooth and healthy delivery. This miracle solidified St. Gerard’s reputation as a protector of mothers and children, leading many women to seek his intercession before and during childbirth.
