SCALA NEWS: WIDENING THE CIRCLE
Since 1732, the Redemptorists — a congregation of missionary priests and brothers — have followed in Jesus’ footsteps, preaching the Word and serving the poor and most abandoned. Redemptorists embrace the spirituality of Jesus the Redeemer. We see the importance of restoring people to a good relationship to God and others. This is modeled after the example of Jesus and His desire to bring people back to God especially sinners, those abandoned, and the poor. The congregation was founded by Saint Alphonsus Liguori near Scala, Italy, to evangelize the marginalized people around the Kingdom of Naples. Members of the Congregation are Catholic priests and vowed religious brothers who minister to the most abandoned people in more than 100 countries across our wounded world.
The Redemptorists are, as well, devoted to Mary, as Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The original icon of Perpetual Help was presented to the Congregation by Pope Pius IX in 1865. The Pope commissioned the Redemptorists to be missionaries of the icon. The Church of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Rome has been home to the original icon since the Redemptorists received it.
Scala News, the official publication of the Congregation, features a lively blend of articles on Redemptorist ministries, spirituality and Our Mother of Perpetual Help devotions, as well as more official news from various Secretariats and the Alphonsian Academy.
