“All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.” —MT, Chapter 1
This act of love occurred in the most humble of settings and was first witnessed by a group of poor shepherds. Think about that! What does that say about God’s love for the poor and the lowly? God flips our earthly notions upside-down, choosing to put first those without riches and without power.
Jesus spent his life advocating for the poor. We are all called to do the same. I am a Redemptorist missionary, dedicating my life to spreading the love of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Together with my fellow Redemptorists, we seek out the poor and most abandoned, wherever they may be, to share Jesus’ message of plentiful redemption.
As you pray and seek the assistance of Our Mother of Perpetual Help this Christmas season, I encourage you to try to be what she is: a Perpetual Help to all people. Like Mary, you and I are instruments of generous help and missionaries of gospel action. Mother of Perpetual Help, make us icons of good will to all we meet!
May Jesus bless your life abundantly this Christmas Day and in the New Year.
In Jesus through Mary,
Bro. Dan Korn, C.Ss.R.
Redemptorist Missionary of the Denver Province
